Need to detect metallic objects at short range? This barrel-bodied inductive proximity sensor from Festo will do the job. It's unaffected by dirt, oil or surface finish and can be used in areas where high vibration and shock can be expected. The PNP (positive-negative-positive) output connects to the positive when the sensor detects metal within a range of up to 4 mm. It can operate at temperatures from -25˚C to +70˚C, making it suitable for a wide range of industrial environments, and it's rated IP (ingress protection) 65, so it's dust-tight and protected from jets of water.
