RS PRO Liquid Flow Sensors
RS PRO flow transducers manufactured in acetal copolymer with brass compression fittings at both ends to fit 15 mm diameter pipe connections. These flow sensors are designed to tailor the transducer to any particular requirements and needs of the user. A variety of pipe connections, electrical terminations and flow ranges are possible giving several possible ways in which it can be arranged that should satisfy various applications.
Before installing flow sensors there are a few things to consider which are bends, valves, flow regulators, tee junctions and other fittings with cause the flow to travel faster at one side of the pipe relative to the other. This asymmetry in the flow can affect the calibration and the disturbance should be as far removed from the sensor as possible and ideally put after the flow sensor. Turbine transducers are affected by viscosity and where possible the viscosity (temperature) of the liquid should be kept fairly constant.
Sensor options include:
257-149 - Grey liquid flow sensor,0.25 to 6.5 l/min, 500Hz, 4600 pulses/litre
257-133 - Beige liquid flow sensor,1.5 to 30 l/min, 600Hz, 1200 pulses/litre
These RS PRO flow transducers have been manufactured to the highest standards and with correct installation and maintenance they will last a long time with reliable operation throughout.

Features and Benefits:
- Provides a pulsed output proportional to flow rate
- LED and photodetector are separated by a turbine mounted on sapphire bearings
- The bearings are made of sapphire for long life and reliability
- LED requires an external current limiting resistor (dependent on supply voltage)
- Suitable for use with mains and heating system waters etc.
- Rise/fall times 60/6ns
- Output voltage 200mV (low); VCC (high)
- Diode: Forward current 10mA, Power dissipation 100mW
- Body, retaining cap and rotor material is acetal copolymer
- Rotor housing is clear nylon
- Stainless steel spindle - good chemical resistance
- Nitrile rubber 'O' ring
- Length: 89 mm
- Height: 51 mm
- Width: 37 mm
- Easy to install and simple to use
- Low pressure drop
- Various flow rates
- High resolution/frequency output
How it works
A jet of liquid is directed at a free running turbine in a specially shaped chamber. The rate of rotation of the turbine is directly proportional to flow rate and the number of revolutions is proportional to the total amount of liquid passed. The passage of each turbine blade cuts a powerful beam of infra red light, this blocking is detected electronically.

Typical Applications:
Flow sensors and indicators are flow meter devices used to measure the amount of liquid, gas or vapour that passes through them and each type of flow sensor has its own specific applications and installation constraints. These flow transducers have been designed for use with mains and heating system waters. Flow sensors can be found in various applications that require control of fluids such as:
- Washing machines
- Showers
- Dishwashers
- Beverage dispensers
- Water treatment
- Cooling systems
