About APC

Onafhankelijke stroomvoorziening (UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply)

0:01 [Music] 0:06 welcome to this third video of the right 0:08 power course in this video we're going 0:11 to talk about how power from a utility 0:13 company comes into a data center and the 0:15 power distribution chain within the data 0:17 center to keep the discussion simple 0:20 this information will focus on north 0:22 american data centers view the 0:24 international power voltages video to 0:26 learn about the different voltages used 0:28 in data centers around the world the 0:32 best goal for a class-four data center 0:34 would be to have two feeds from separate 0:36 utilities or from at least two main 0:38 substations this would provide two 0:42 completely redundant power chains 0:44 including redundant access to the 0:46 utility power grid since this is very 0:49 expensive and usually not feasible the 0:52 most popular option is the backup the 0:54 utility power feed with diesel 0:56 generators a series of switches on both 0:59 the utility feed and the generator feed 1:01 are used to provide a level of 1:03 redundancy for all the equipment in the 1:05 data center this seemingly complicated 1:07 chart is actually a simplified view of 1:10 what many data center schematics look 1:12 like let's zoom in on this and take it 1:15 piece by piece we'll start with the 1:17 utility feed power coming from the 1:20 utility distribution substation can 1:22 range from two to thirty plus kilovolts 1:25 since the power entering the building is 1:28 generally 480 volts there has to be a 1:31 transformer that can reduce the voltage 1:33 down to 480 volts the power then passes 1:37 from the transformer through an 1:38 automatic transfer switch or switches 1:40 the purpose of this switch is the sense 1:43 when sufficient power is no longer 1:45 coming from the utility due to brownouts 1:47 blackouts or short term power 1:49 fluctuations if the utility power is 1:52 interrupted the automatic transfer 1:55 switch will signal the backup generators 1:57 that turn on the generators will start 1:59 powering up to deliver electricity for 2:02 the data center equipment 2:04 many power disruptions can be under 2:07 three seconds so a data center operator 2:09 will not want the generators turning on 2:11 needlessly also it takes a little bit of 2:14 time for the generators to completely 2:16 power up and reach a stable level of 2:18 power output to bridge the gap between 2:21 when the utility power stops - when the 2:24 generators are delivering full power we 2:27 have a standby power source called an 2:29 uninterruptible power supply which is 2:32 known as UPS the standby power provided 2:36 by UPS is known as ride-through power 2:38 and can be either a battery or a 2:40 flywheel system both systems store 2:43 specified amount of energy to span the 2:45 time between utility power outage and 2:48 generator power start up the flywheel 2:51 UPS is when used that series can 2:53 generally generate sufficient power for 2:56 at least a few minutes battery systems 2:59 can provide power for longer durations 3:01 of 15 minutes or more there are benefits 3:04 and drawbacks with both types of systems 3:07 after utility powers are stored and 3:09 stable the automatic transfer switch 3:12 switches back to the utility feed and 3:14 shuts off the backup generators the UPS 3:17 is then recharged their energy storage 3:19 capabilities the power from the UPS is 3:23 usually wired to the Power Distribution 3:24 units frequently referred to as PDUs 3:28 note that these very large PDUs are not 3:31 the same as the rack PD useful reference 3:33 later in these videos I'll refer to 3:36 these large PD use as floor PD use to 3:38 differentiate them from the rack PD use 3:41 the floor PD use transform the power 3:44 from 480 volts down to either four 3:46 hundred or two hundred and eight volts 3:48 older data centers were built with 208 3:51 volt power words most new data centers 3:53 are using four hundred volt 3:55 the reason for this development will be 3:58 covered later in another video floor PDS 4:01 are connected to a series of remote 4:03 power panels who refer to as rpps these 4:07 are larger versions of the breaker panel 4:08 in your home if you look at this panel 4:12 it has multiple points where you can 4:14 connect wires to run to your equipment 4:16 these points are called poles there are 4:19 panel boards that can have a hundred 4:20 sixty eight poles if you're delivering 4:24 three-phase power to the rack then you 4:26 will connect an electrical wire to three 4:28 separate poles these three wires are 4:31 within a conduit that's called a whip 4:33 and these whips run under the raised 4:35 floor of a data center at the end of the 4:38 whip is the outlet box each rack should 4:41 have two outlets from two different RP 4:43 beads attached to two separate UPS's as 4:46 part of a redundant power chain the 4:50 right PDU in each rack plugs into the 4:52 outlets most servers now have two power 4:55 supplies and it's important to plug each 4:56 power supply into a different rack PDU 4:59 this way if a UPS should fail then the 5:03 connected floor PDU and RPP will fail 5:06 and one rack PDU will fail if properly 5:10 configured the other rack PDU along with 5:13 the other power chain will remain 5:15 operational and your servers won't go 5:17 down an important exception to that just 5:19 mentioned power chain is the increasing 5:21 use of overhead bus systems these 5:24 systems connect to the UPS and eliminate 5:26 the need for floor PDUs rpps and whips 5:29 running underneath a raised floor 5:31 instead the overhead bus systems have 5:34 sophisticated channels running over the 5:37 racks and other equipment outlet boxes 5:40 can then be placed wherever needed along 5:42 these channels and are simply connected 5:44 into the overhead bus way the rack PDUs 5:47 are then plugged into these outlet boxes 5:49 above the racks 5:51 this has been a very simplified review 5:54 of the power chain within a data center 5:55 many of the topics that were briefly 5:58 mentioned here can be the basis for 5:59 extensive discussion by themselves the 6:02 most important takeaway from this video 6:04 is that to have reliable redundant power 6:07 for your servers in the racks 6:08 there are many sophisticated pieces of 6:11 equipment that need to be properly 6:12 configured the next video in this series 6:15 will discuss the range of voltages used 6:17 in data centers around the world
