A digital multimeter is a device that provides measurements of circuit parameters such as voltage (volts), currents (amps) and resistance (ohms). Digital multimeters also offer a wide range of AC and DC measuring capabilities to accommodate a variety of applications. Many multimeters include continuity and diode test functions with an audible alarm for enahnced user experience.
How do they work?
Through the use of a digital output readout, they are connected to a device and measure typically the voltage and any resistances and give you an output you can measure.
Different types of Multimeter:
Bench meters – The most accurate of the two device types, the bench meter is a larger device, not very portable. This is because of the extra level of detail it can provide you when measuring certain parameters
Handheld - Very portable and allow you to work on the go and access hard to reach machinery. Not as accurate as their bench counterparts, however they still display a high level of accuracy.
Features and benefits:
More accurate and easier to use than analogue multimeters
They help reduce reading errors
Digital multimeters displays do not having moving parts, making them free from wear or shock failures
Zero adjustment needed
Some feature thermal imaging built into the device
Handheld units are extremely portable and ergonomically easy to handle
Drop, water and splash resistance
Clamp options available
Some units have built in work lights and laser pointers for hard to access areas
Long battery life
Auto power off features
Where might I use one?
Electrical testing, plug sockets, lighting and more
