Decoders & Demultiplexers

The difference between decoders and demultiplexers is that demultiplexers select an output line. A decoder takes in inputs and uses those inputs to determine which of the 2N outputs lines is high.

A decoder has:
N inputs
2N outputs
A decoder selects one of 2N outputs by decoding the binary value on the N inputs. The decoder generates all of the minterms of the N input variables. Exactly one output will be active for each combination of the inputs.
Demultiplexer (demux):
receives the output signals from the multiplexer and the receiver end it converts them back to the original form
