Latch ICs

A latch IC is a board mounting integrated circuit that is part of the Standard Logic IC family. A latch IC is a bistable multivibrator which has two (Stable) states and a feedback path allowing the device to store information. What are the different types of Latch IC's?

There are four main types of Latch IC's, SR Latch (Set-Reset) D-Latch (Data) T (toggle) and J-K. Latch IC’S has two inputs and one output. The inputs are referred to as the SET input the RESET input. The main differences between devices are the number and types of inputs they have and how they function and change state.


The CMOS circuitry used in Integrated circuits from the 4000 series logic IC families means the components are particularly sensitive to static. It is very important to remember that touching a pin while charged with static electricity can damage the IC. Always leave your components in their anti-static protective packaging until they are ready to be used.


Latch IC's are used in a wide range of electronic applications. Some of the most common are

  • Digital data storage
  • Buffer storage, data transfer and holding registers
  • Memory addressing
