Jaw Couplings

Jaw couplings are used within electrical motor and internal combustion systems to transmit power (torque). They are designed to connect two shafts, enabling smooth torque transmission and reducing loss of power.

Jaw couplings generally consist of two hubs and an elastomer element, commonly referred to as a cushion or spider. Both the hubs and the elastomer element can be produced from a variety of different materials and hardness to suit their application. In applications where intermittent motion and a flexible element is considered inappropriate, the use of rigid shaft couplings may be more appropriate.

How do jaw couplings work?

Jaw couplings work by preventing shock loading (the sudden and drastic increase of load in a system) and/or accommodating shaft misalignment where this has been caused by thermal expansion or manufacturing inefficiencies.

What are jaw coupling used for?

Jaw couplings are commonly used for transmitting power to industrial equipment such as compressors, gear boxes, pumps, mixers, conveyors and blowers.
